UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. JOHN W. GUERIN, or MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. HOD. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,250, dated June 11, 1901. Application filed October 18, 1900. Serial No. 32,924. (No model.) To aZZ whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, JOHN W. GUERIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 313 Nineteenth avenue, Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mortar orBrick Hods, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in mortar or brick hods; and the object of my improvement is to provide a hod that may be readily folded into a small compass for convenience in transporting it. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end view showing the closed end of the hod. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is an end view of the open end, and Fig. 4 is a View illustrating the manner of folding the difierent parts together. Like characters refer to like parts in the several figures. l and 2 are the two side pieces, made from sheet-steel, and are hinged together at their lower edges, the hinge-joint being made in the common form, a joint-rod being passed through loops that are formed at regular spaces upon the lower edge of each sheet. The end piece 3 is composed of two parts 4 and 5, hinge-jointed together on line A B and hinge-jointed with the sides 1 and 2. The end piece when fully extended holds the sides at an angle of ninety degrees to each other. As the end piece is folded inward on the hinge A B the sides 1 and 2 of the hod are brought together, as shown in Fig. 4:. The shank 6 is made in two parts, each part being pivoted to strengthening straps 7 and 8, secured to sides 1 and 2, and are adapted to be folded toward the sides, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the hod is extended to an operative position, the two parts of the shank are brought together and inserted in the handpiece 9, as shown in Fig. 1. At the forward ends of the sides 1 and 2 are secured stiffening-ribs 10 and 11. These ribs are riveted to the sides at their upper ends, and their lower ends are pivoted to the joint rod and are formed with extensions 12 and 13, that abut together below the joint when the hod is in operative position and serve to stiffen the joint against any farther outward movement of the sides. I have not shown any shoulder-pad, and it is understood that any of the usual pads may be used in connection with my invention. What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is 1. A hod having its side pieces hinged-together at their lower edges, and an end piece hinged to the side pieces, the whole adapted to fold together. 2. A hod having its side pieces hinged together, in combination with an end piece composed of two parts hinged together and having one side of each part hinged to the adjacent side piece, the whole being adapted to fold together. 3. A hod provided with a shank made in two parts, each part being pivoted to one of the sides and adapted to fold against it. 4. A hod having its side pieces hinged together, and provided at their forward ends with strengthening-pieces that are secured to the sides and pivoted upon the hinge-joint and having extensions below the joint adapted to abut against each other when the sides are in operative position. I 5. In a hod, the combination of the sides hinged together along their lower edges, an end piece composed of two parts hinged together, and having each part hinged to the adjacent side pieces, a divided shank having its members pivoted to the sides and a handpiece that holds the shank and hod in operative position. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. JOHN W. GUERIN. Witnesses: E. J. BRYDEN, EDWARD F. OTTO.
